On Sunday morning, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir approved military plans to continue operations on the northern front, coinciding with escalating talk about a possible American-Iranian understanding that includes a 60-day truce and arrangements related to the Strait of Hormuz and Lebanon.
Israeli Channel 12 reported that Zamir arrived at the Northern Command Center to approve the military plans, as the Israeli army prepares for “a wide range of scenarios.”
The channel added, "Military preparations and operations will continue as usual until different instructions are issued."
In the same context, the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation quoted an informed source as saying that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed, during his talks with US President Donald Trump, his fears about postponing the handling of the Iranian nuclear issue, and about linking the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon to the ongoing understandings with Iran.
This comes after the Axios website revealed that Washington and Tehran are close to signing an extendable understanding for a period of 60 days, which includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz and removing mines from it, as part of a broader negotiating path aimed at reducing the escalation in the region.
In parallel, the Iranian Tasnim Agency reported that Tehran has not yet accepted any measures related to its nuclear file, stressing that any potential understanding remains conditional on the release of part of the frozen Iranian assets.
The Israeli escalation comes at a time when confrontations continue on the southern Lebanese front, as the Israeli army announced the implementation of operations against Hezbollah infrastructure in the Jabal Rous area, while mutual raids and military tensions continue along the border.
